How To Make a Dynamic Sketch
In this post, I’ll explain to you a super EASY trick or technique to avoid smudging the canvas when making your charcoal sketch.
We’re going to sketch a seascape. It’s a fairly simple drawing, not so much the painting.
With this sketch, you’ll realize how SUPER EASY drawing can be.
We’ll work with a 2B pencil.
We have a horizon line.
We always recommend working based on the rule of thirds. In this case, we place the horizon line below the middle of the canvas to leave more space for the sky.
It’s a sunset, and we have a barge in the foreground.
We’ll draw a diagonal line to define the beach and then continue with the barge.
Here, there’s no need to be very precise; it’s important to maintain perspective.
It’s as simple as that.
Let’s make clouds, but in the painting. There’s no need to draw them now since it’s quite straightforward, and the graphite will later mix with the oil paint. So, we would have to work on them a bit more to remove it, which would take up time. If we can avoid some elements, we do.
The charcoal sketching is super easy. Just a horizon line, beach, and barge.
In this drawing, we’ve worked on a 20×30 cm canvas board. I always use a 2B pencil to not dirty the support too much since it’s an intermediate pencil; it doesn’t have much grease.
If we had to erase, there’s no problem because it doesn’t smudge much. But as I mentioned before, it takes more time.
If it were a more complicated drawing in terms of detail, we could work on sulfite paper or poster paper, low-quality paper.
We work on that paper and make the drawing. It has to be the same size as the support. Then we transfer or trace it so we don’t have to dirty, soil, or handle the support too much.
