You can use the techniques from our oil painting courses with acrylics, but there are a few things to keep in mind to make it all work well.

The biggest difference is the drying time: acrylics dry much faster than oils, so mixing colors requires a little more planning.

If you need more working time, you can use a retarder medium or lightly spray your paint with water to keep it from drying too fast.

For layers and glazes, the approach is similar, but instead of oil-based mediums, you’ll want to use an acrylic glazing liquid or a little water to achieve that transparency.

And if you like thick textures, dense-bodied acrylics or gels can give you that nice impasto effect.

So yes, the techniques can be used but you will need to adapt them slightly.
